153MW/612MWh! CALB Zhijiu Battery Powers the Red Sands Battery Energy Storage Project in South Africa

CALB Zhijiu Battery Powers the Red Sands Battery Energy Storage Project in South Africa

Recently, CALB provided high-performance energy storage cells for Africa's largest standalone energy storage system—the 153MW/612MWh Red Sands Battery Energy Storage Project in South Africa.

The Red Sands project is located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Upington in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is part of the country’s first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). Covering an area of around 5 hectares, the project connects to the grid via the Eskom Garona substation and is designed to perform critical functions such as load shifting, frequency regulation, and renewable energy integration.

For this project, CALB deployed its globally mass-produced, next-generation 314Ah Gen2.0 ultra-long cycle energy storage cell, based on its proprietary Zhijiu” battery technology. This solution delivers breakthroughs in key performance areas, including long cycle life, high energy efficiency, and outstanding safety and reliability. The technology complies with stringent international safety standards such as GB, UL, and IEC, ensuring robust performance even in challenging application environments and delivering safe, reliable, and sustained returns for customers.

Supporting Africa’s largest standalone energy storage system marks another significant milestone for CALB’s advanced battery technology in the global market. The company remains committed to driving technological innovation, deepening global energy cooperation, and contributing to the global energy transition—bringing clean power to more corners of the world.
